800-CEO-READ Announces BIG WAVE SURFING Book as One of Its 2011 Business Book Awards Candidates in the Category of Creativity and Innovation

This Follows on Two Awards from USA Book News in November, Bringing the Number of Awards to Seven Received This Year

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Dec. 23, 2011 — On December 22nd, the Amazon Best Seller, Big Wave Surfing, Extreme Technology Development, Management, Marketing and Investing, was notified by 800-CEO-READ that they were a candidate for best business book of the year in the category of Creativity and Innovation. The Milwaukee company is one of the leading national book suppliers and business information providers, and just this week announced the candidates of its fifth annual Business Book Awards, which aims to recognize the best business books and authors of 2011.

This new announcement solidifies Big Wave Surfing as one of the top business books of 2011. Prior to this announcement, Big Wave Surfing has received seven awards, including two in November from USA book News, more than any other business book this year.

Candidates from the following categories: Marketing and Sales; General Business; Entrepreneurship and Small Business; Finance and Economics; Innovation and Creativity; Leadership; Management; and Personal Development, were posted daily this week at the blog: http://blog.800ceoread.com.

The winning books, authors, and publishers from each category will be announced in January 2012.

800-CEO-READ's founder and president Jack Covert says the 800-CEO-READ Business Book Awards offer a great opportunity to review and distinguish the top titles of the year. "We want to thank the nominees and everyone who participated in this year's awards. For the past twenty-seven years we've been the only bookseller in the country focused exclusively on the business audience. This experience has put us in the unique position to highlight the best of the genre," says Covert.

The competition included such publishing giants as Penguin, Wiley and the Harvard Business Review Press, and Big Wave Surfing finds itself included among such well-known authors and titles such as Nanovation: How a Little Car Can Teach the World to Think Big and Act Bold by Kevin & Jackie Freiberg and Dain Dunston (Thomas Nelson) and Best Practices Are Stupid: 40 Ways to Out-Innovate the Competition by Stephen M. Shapiro (Portfolio/Penguin US).

With seven previous awards in 2011, including two recently from USA Book News, Big Wave Surfing has confirmed its popularity with reviewers and readers alike. When it launched in late March it stayed on Amazon's #1 ranking for Business and Investing as well as Computers and Internet for most of the week.

According to the author, Dr. Thurber, "I wrote Big Wave Surfing as an analogy to show how disruption causes big waves to form and that these disruptions will have far-reaching economic, political and social effects both now and into the future.

"As the book points out, it's critical to be able to spot these big waves forming. We talk about them from a technological perspective, but it's clear that technology is rapidly altering the landscape and that the landscape is rapidly altering technology."

Thurber continues, "We live in interesting times. Our true measure will be how well we adapt not only to the speed of change, but the results of these changes. I believe my book will help people begin to understand and deal with these changes. I have spent a lifetime in the computer business, a business that can change radically every 12-18 months, sometimes sooner. We are talking about disruption, and often extreme techniques are needed to deal with this disruption."

Thurber says like the physical surfers who ply the big waves at a beach like Mavericks, these new concepts won't "always be pretty, and in fact, it may be down-right dangerous. There will be winners. There will be wipeouts and losers. But if we don't boldly embrace the next wave, the innovation economy, then profound structural changes will occur in American society."

Are we ready for the new innovative economy and new forms of American manufacturing? Readers can find out in the pages of Big Wave Surfing.
