ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Dec. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Alaska Structures, Inc. (AKS) of Anchorage, Alaska donated a 480-bed shelter system to the devastated area of Tacloban City to aid in the recovery efforts following Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Leyte Province of the Philippines.
The donation included: (24) 20' x 32.5' Alaska Small Shelter Systems with insulation, lighting and electrical systems, and re-usable transportation containers, along with (4) power distribution systems with diesel generators, and (24) Alaska 5-ton ECUs (ruggedized HVAC Systems), valued at more than $2 million US dollars.
The entire system was flown to the Philippines aboard a chartered 747 cargo plane. AKS' CEO Richard Hotes and a small group of AKS team members were on the ground to meet the cargo plane, unload, and transport the camp facility by barge to Tacloban city. The entire Alaska Structures Camp Facility, including air conditioning/HVAC, internal electrical systems with lighting, power generation, and power distribution was assembled and operational within 48 hours of arrival on the ground in Tacloban.
The facility is currently providing sleeping accommodations for US Marines and Philippine Army soldiers, as well as other relief workers. The shelters will be left in place to assist other aid, NGO and relief groups performing recovery efforts in the city of Tacloban and surrounding areas.
