Alison Sigethy and Carol Talkov Present Elements of Nature at Artists & Makers Studios

ROCKVILLE, Md., May 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Works by two artists mining themes from the natural world will be on display this month in the Elements of Nature exhibition at Artists & Makers Studios. For the show, Carol Talkov creates intricate mosaics in stone, glass, minerals, and gems representing four natural elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. Alison Sigethy compliments these dynamic mosaic pieces with her salvaged wood and glass sculptures evoking serene forest and river scenes.

The artists chose works that reflected the selected theme, rooted in the ancient Greek belief in these four elements, Earth, Water, Air, and Fire, as the fundamentals of nature and the transformative properties of these elemental manifestations to create the dissimilarity and diversity in the world around us. In spite of the uniqueness of nature's singularity, there is also the recognition that the principle of total unity exists because everything in nature consists of those same four elements.

Both Sigethy and Talkov are Torpedo Factory Art Center artists, meeting there after Talkov was juried in in 2013. Their mutual admiration for one another's artwork fostered conversations about the traditional place for natural and salvaged materials in fine art and how their own work could expand expectations in the field. "Working with materials found in nature and discovering innovative ways to transform these elements provides a great opportunity for us, as artists," says Sigethy, "to explore our craft, as well as our environment, more fully."

Judith HeartSong, a local artist, arts community builder, and founder of Artists & Makers Studios, was already familiar with each artist's work before inviting them to display in the gallery space: "The work of Alison Sigethy is at once tactile and engaging. Her shapes and installations can mimic the natural world in glass, and yet the slickness of the glass portrays nature in a whole new, awe-inspiring way. Alison's rich visual vocabulary is that of a seasoned artist who has found her way, and her means of expression. Carol Talkov's work is literally grounded in the natural world, with rocks, minerals, gems and glass that are combined by the hundreds to make a whole new composition in mosaic that is even greater in the end than the sum of its parts. Carol's work is patience personified."

Heartsong describes how the art works in tandem to produce an enchanting exhibition, "Both women's' work engages the viewer and draws you into a world that is both familiar and slightly alien at the same time – turning on your senses and your imagination at once and encouraging continuing study and exploration of their powerful pieces. We are delighted to host these amazing artists and professionals at Artists & Makers Studios."

Elements of Nature opens at Artists & Makers Studios on Friday, May 6, with a reception from 6 to 9 pm. The exhibition continues through Thursday, May 26, 2016. Viewing hours are 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday-Friday, Saturday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, and Sundays by appointment. Saturday May 7th will be an Open Studio event for the resident artists, and an additional festive opportunity for visitors to see the exhibits from 12-4 PM.
