With the new edition, the Handbook is also introducing a summary (including schematics and basic descriptions) of the most important advanced gemological laboratory instruments currently in use, making the practicing gemologist-appraiser more aware of when such methods should be called upon. This material was developed for ASA by Dr. Jim Shigley and Al Gilbertson, both of the Gemological Institute of America.

In its more than 50 pages, the Handbook brings together essential information drawn from the most authoritative sources for the practicing gems and jewelry appraiser. It also helps jewelry store personnel to categorize and describe gems and jewelry for detailed statements of sale and other uses.

Until September 1st only, new purchasers of the Handbook will pay at the old rates of $112 for the print version, $80 for the PDF version, or $152 for both. Afterwards, prices will increase to $127 for the print version, $95 for the PDF version and $167 for both. Previous Handbook buyers may download the full updated PDF version for $20 using a discount code that will be sent to them.

The Handbook was founded by the late Kirk Root, GG, ASA, Master Gemologist Appraiser®, who passed away in early 2014. The 8th edition, which was introduced a year later, has sold nearly 200 copies. Proceeds go to benefit the Master Gemologist Appraiser® program and other work of the Gems and Jewelry discipline, whose members become designated as Accredited Members or Accredited Senior Appraisers.

The hard copy, PDF, or both may be purchased online at ASA's Marketplace.
