The second mystery in the series, Flight of the Tarantula Hawk is a new and different thriller with a paranormal twist. Lance Underphal—eccentrically psychic as ever—is joined by a 6'6", 247 lbs. ex-SEAL private investigator and a local homicide detective. They soon find themselves on a rollercoaster ride pursuing a psycho killer through bank foreclosures, Goth-fests, and insane asylums. Balancing character and plot-driven action with elements of suspense, its gritty realism leans toward the visual with the thrills and chills of a hit movie.

IndieReader, the premier venue for discriminating book-lovers, has selected Tarantula Hawk among its Best Book picks for 2014. At the same time, Scott has released the third in the series, and the fourth is due out this year.

The Clarion Review recently said this about Flight of the Tarantula Hawk: "Not for the faint of heart, Michael Allan Scott's thriller balances mystery and horror in equal proportions . . . this inventive tale deserves a high mark for intricate plotting."

Similarly Kirkus Review says, "Scott can churn out visually rich passages with ease . . . Solid characters and Lance's alluringly grim dreams help distinguish this murder mystery."

Carrying forward the momentum of his popular series, Arizona-based author Scott creates new twists on the old "film noir" cinema style for his newest Lance Underphal Mystery, Cut-Throat Syndrome, due for release in 2015.

Dubbing his crime drama style "Noir Nouveau," Scott continues to expand the boundaries of the mystery thriller genre, releasing paperback and Kindle versions of Grey Daze, the third book in the mystery series. Both versions are available on Amazon.

Noir Nouveau style, paranormal twists, and fast action in movie-like scenes set the Lance Underphal mysteries apart from the typical whodunits and serial-killer thrillers. Scott exposes his characters' most intimate details to reveal the heart of his dark mystery stories. Their intricate plotting gets 5-star acclaim, pushing the envelope in the mystery, thriller, suspense genres.

The series' main protagonist, Lance Underphal is a down and out, freelance photographer haunted by his dead wife and plagued with psychic visions. With each new story, he scrambles to reveal the killers' identities before they kill again.

Dark Side of Sunset Pointe opens the series. A mystery movie in book form, it draws on the author's real life experiences as a commercial real estate professional, creating an authentic plot. While there are no vampires, werewolves, or zombies, it delivers hard-boiled thrills with a paranormal twist.

The third mystery novel in the series, Grey Daze, takes a fresh murder and spins it out of control. On a wild ride through a criminal underworld, Lance slams face first into corrupt police, a gunrunning biker gang, and a drug addicted killer–not to mention confrontations with the dead. There are layers of plots within plots that twist this new thriller into a startling climax.

For readers who enjoy a different twist on an age-old genre, the Lance Underphal Mystery series burns the bridges from traditional mystery stories, blazing a new trail into the heart of darkness.
