Malaria is endemic in Cote d'Ivoire, where more than 10% of children under 5 years of age die from malaria each year. Yet, the disease is completely preventable and treatable. Malaria is also a huge threat to the lives of pregnant women. One of the most effective methods of preventing malaria is by sleeping under an LLIN. In fact, Rotary International has a long history of combating malaria by getting involved in the distribution of these life-saving mosquito nets through Rotarians Eliminating Malaria – a Rotarian Action Group (REMaRAG).

"When Bestnet approached representatives from Rotary International about making a donation of Netprotect® LLINs to one of their distribution campaigns, Cote d'Ivoire was immediately identified as a country where there was a serious need," said Trine Sig, Bestnet Managing Director. "In November 2010, the results of the presidential election were contested. This 2010-2011 Ivorian crisis quickly erupted into a full-scale military conflict. A civil war which found many Ivorians displaced by rapidly spreading fighting," continued Sig. Additionally, many of the on-going distributions of mosquito nets were negatively impacted and disrupted in many places by the chaos commonly associated with war-torn countries. Aissata Coulibaly, the West African Malaria Coordinator for REMaRAG, identified an urgent need for the nets to be delivered to Abijan, from which they will be delivered to communities in dire need of them.

"Bestnet not only offered to donate the 2500 nets and pay for their transport, but to produce them in royal blue and gold stripes to match the Rotary logo and to place a Rotary logo on the care label of each mosquito net. The unique striped nets will allow Rotary to track their distribution. More importantly, Rotary will be able to demonstrate the positive influence of striped nets on increasing user-compliance, and provide Rotary with the ability to track the long life-span of Netprotect®," said Sig.

At present, Bestnet is the only manufacturer of World Health Organization (WHOPES) recommended LLINs that can be produced in any color or combination of colored stripes without affecting the efficacy of the insecticidal activity of the nets. Furthermore, Netprotect® LLINs are made from polyethylene monofilament yarns, resulting in a mosquito net that is rugged and durable and lasts up to twice as long as inferior nets made from polyester fibers.
