Mike Smith, President of The Brokerage, Inc., is making the media rounds to clarify a number of issues surrounding the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare as some call it. Last week, Smith appeared on Fox News Channel in Dallas and Fort Worth, and he's actively seeking opportunities to continue bringing informative explanations to people via other television and radio news outlets. Talking points include the top 10 tips for buying health insurance from the marketplace and how to avoid the individual mandate penalty amongst others.

"There have been a number of reasons given as to why ACA has dramatically improved the availability of health insurance for everyone," Smith said. "Some reasons given are true, but some are misstatements. That's why I really want to do as many radio and TV interviews as possible to make these points, set the record straight, and help educate people about their ACA options."

The HealthCare.gov website, designed to help the masses enroll, has been plagued by congestion, bureaucracy and mechanical issues since its launch. The White House was hoping for 500,000 new sign-ups in the first month, and the Congressional Budget Office projected that 7 million people would get private health insurance on the exchange while another 9 million got Medicaid coverage. According to the Health and Human Services Department, however, only 26,800 people succeeded in purchasing health insurance on HealthCare.gov this October.

"HealthCare.gov is not the only place to get information on the new health plans," Smith added. "Nearly all agents and advisors can provide a host of more options to consumers. Most consumers don't know that, unlike navigators, we have to have ethics training as well as be licensed by the State Department of Insurance as ACA and AHIP Certified Counselors."

Only those that qualify for a government subsidy are required to sign up through HealthCare.gov. The rest of consumers have more options because ACA is not a specific plan like Medicare. People are still purchasing insurance from a private insurance company, but with plans that have coverage as per the law. In other words, if more consumers knew they could approach any agent or advisor for help, it may lighten the load on the website for those that need to go through the exchange and make the whole online sign-up process run a bit smoother.
