Colgate University Purchases Incident Management System to Enhance Situational Awareness on Campus

BUFFALO, N.Y., July 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — In response to campus and regional flooding encountered during Hurricanes Irene & Lee, emergency managers at Colgate University identified that they needed an emergency management system to allow key staff members to share information and coordinate their response. Buffalo Computer Graphics (BCG) was the logical choice to meet these needs because Colgate University emergency managers were already familiar with DisasterLAN (DLAN) software, which is used throughout New York State. Colgate personnel anticipate that the recently installed DLAN Emergency Manager (EM) system will be key in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from incidents affecting the campus, staff, and students.

DLAN will allow university staff to have a common platform for displaying, prioritizing, and analyzing data from planned or emergency incidents, including requests for assistance, resource allocation, and task completion. In addition, DLAN is designed to share information with other emergency systems, allowing Colgate to maintain better situational awareness not just on campus but with other local, regional, and State emergency management partners.

For a fast and effective response, emergency management staff must be comfortable with the tools at their disposal long before an emergency occurs. Colgate worked with BCG's experienced staff and preparedness specialists partner company EPRG to identify important processes and procedures Colgate requires to meet their unique day-to-day business needs. EPRG and BCG adapted Colgate's system to compliment these processes. Custom configuration is a key advantage of the solution and will allow Colgate to integrate the product into their daily business and emergency workflows more easily. Colgate plans to use DLAN daily to monitor informational feeds that are key to business operations at the university, as well as to manage large campus events, trainings, and exercises.
