CollegeChoice.net Identifies the 50 Most Popular Colleges for International Student Enrollment

RALEIGH, N.C., June 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — College search website CollegeChoice.net has published a list of the 50 most popular U.S. colleges and universities for international students. The University of Southern California leads the list, followed by the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and Purdue University, each hosting over 9,500 international students during the 2012-2013 academic year.

The list is based on data about international student enrollment from the Institute of International Education's latest Open Doors Report covering the 2012-2013 academic year and ranks schools according the total number of international students enrolled.

"The goal behind the ranking is to highlight those schools that have established themselves as popular and welcoming places for students from other countries," said J. Alder, Managing Editor of CollegeChoice.net. "We believe this is a distinction schools and their communities should be proud of and will also be useful to prospective international students interested in applying to colleges and universities in the United States."

More international students enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions during the 2012-2013 academic year than ever before, up approximately 40 percent from a decade ago. While international students make up only 4 percent of total higher education enrollment, they contributed an estimated $24 billion to the U.S. economy. Nearly half (49 percent) of all international students enrolled for 2012-2013 came from China, India and South Korea even though numbers for the latter two declined from the 2011-2012 academic year, down 4 percent and 2 percent respectively. At the same time, 16 countries had an increase in 2012-2013 over the previous academic year. Most of these students enrolled in undergraduate programs.
