The winning team was selected today at the Denver Country Club after student teams from six local universities presented their investment research and recommendations to a panel of judges. This year, DaVita (DVA), a Fortune 500® company and a leading provider of dialysis services in the United States with a $14B market cap, graciously agreed to serve as the subject company. Judges included Angelo Gray, a Group Finance Director at DaVita and former Vice President of Investment Banking Division of Healthcare at Goldman Sachs; Peter Quinn, CFA, a principal and Chief Investment Officer at Helm Investment Management and a former president of CFACO; Matthew Sommer, CFA, CFP®, Vice President, Defined Contribution & Wealth Advisor Services team leader at Janus and industry veteran with past senior management positions at Morgan Stanley, Citi Global Wealth Management and Smith Barney; and Jordan Kunz, CFA, CFP®, financial advisor and analyst at Colorado Financial Management and current CFACO president.

The following universities participated in the 7th Annual Colorado Competition: University of Colorado – Boulder; Metropolitan State University of Denver; Colorado State University; University of Denver; University of Northern Colorado and University of Colorado – Denver. The students are required to produce an equity research report with a buy/sell/hold recommendation and a 12 month price target. Scores are given for industry analysis, valuation, and financial analysis.

Participation in the Research Challenge is an invaluable opportunity for the future generation of analysts to learn directly from industry experts. "Students develop real life experience of doing equity research," said Ivan Sichkar, CFA. "Teams utilize their entire skill set: writing, presenting and defending their thesis," said Matthew Sommer. "This competition became the absolute priority in our lives; we were focused on the win," said Daniel Melton, the winning team member.

Thank you to all student teams, employees of subject companies, academic and industry advisors, judges, graders, volunteers and to our sponsors: Kaplan Schweser – a platinum sponsor for many years; and FactSet, who has provided free Web Factset workstations to all students and faculty advisors.
