Italian Immigrant uses his passion for soccer and education to help others live the American Dream
MEDIACOM PARK, N.Y., Oct. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — An amazing reunion spanning five decades of Columbia University soccer players and coaches took place Saturday, October 12, 2013 to celebrate the naming of the school's soccer venue after one of their own, former Columbia Lions' co-captain and cable television entrepreneur, Rocco B. Commisso.
Dr. M. Dianne Murphy, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education for Columbia University, welcomed soccer alumni and members of Commisso's 1970 team including co-captain and All American, Len Renery, and former head coach, Jim Rein. During an on-field dedication and reception, Commisso was honored for his long-standing contributions to the Lions' soccer program, both as player and supportive alumnus.
Additionally, family, friends and students from Commisso's high school alma mater, Mount Saint Michael Academy, in the Bronx, NY, attended the event.
Born in Calabria, Italy, Commisso earned a bachelor's degree from Columbia's School of Engineering and Applied Science.
