Conversion to XML of Industry Standards Library at SAE International by Data Conversion Laboratory Greatly Improves Productivity and Creates New Revenue Streams

Conversion of thousands of industry standards documents to XML increases interoperability of data, integration into SAE International customers' workflow

FRESH MEADOWS, N.Y., Aug. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL), a pioneer in electronic document conversion since 1981, teamed up with SAE International to convert a massive library of engineering documents to XML format. The project's long-term goal is to convert approximately 10,000 standards documents covering a range of industries.

XML is a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format which is both human-readable and machine-readable, and allows XML-encoded documents to be used  on the web, ebooks, and the many other ways that documents will get distributed over the next year. The objective of SAE International's XML conversion is to make its standards document library more widely and conveniently accessible to the organization's thousands of end users in engineering and manufacturing.

"SAE International, like many Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), is listening to customer demand for increased integration of its documents into customer workflows. Every conversion project has its own nuances, and DCL's ability to define their technology for each customer is part of what has made their work with us so successful," explains Becky Fadik, Business Unit Leader at SAE International. "Engineering standards documents must be rigorously accurate – a single misplaced decimal point can be disastrous. In our work together since 2009, DCL has proven its ability to ramp up production of even the most complex conversions as needed with no drop-off in quality."

Mark Gross, President and CEO of Data Conversion Laboratory, emphasized that "Quality is our number one focus. As the foundation of our process and methodology, we engineer quality into every project from its initiation. Building quality into the process is much more effective than fixing things later, providing greater efficiency and quicker to market for our clients, and for their customers."

DCL's innovative approach to quality control has facilitated its climb to industry leadership. One example is a tailor-made viewing style sheet that DCL creates for each customer to focus a reviewer's attention on the document's most important aspects. The viewing sheet is just one facet of DCL's proprietary conversion technology that empowers customers to achieve ambitious project goals.

SAE International and DCL started working together in 2009, when SAE International turned to DCL for assistance with a critical and time-sensitive conversion of technical documents. DCL quickly leveraged its resources to deliver over 300,000 pages of high-quality material in just three months. Since then, SAE International's trust in DCL's processes, methodology and adaptability has been reaffirmed many times.

For the standards document conversion, SAE International has relied on the guidance of DCL to create the specifications dictating the work and its output. DCL responded with an extraordinary degree of flexibility, underscoring the characteristics that have made the company so reliable and trusted by so many customers around the world.

Gross concluded: "Our collaborative and quality-oriented approach informs every aspect of our methodology and proprietary technology. The loyalty of a respected organization like SAE International is a testament to DCL's leadership in the document conversion space."
