'Creative Evolution Revisited': A New Theological Theory of Evolution

GROSSE POINTE, Mich., June 16, 2010 — Creative Evolution Revisited (published by iUniverse) by Donald Austin offers a new way of thinking about evolution by combining various elements from differing philosophies.

In the late 1800's, there were two competing theories regarding evolution: Natural Theology held by William Paley, and Darwin's theory of evolution. At this same time in history, a famous French philosopher named Henri Bergson offered a third option that has come to be known as creative evolution.

Bergson's theory was based on his belief that, "we are forever and constantly changing from state to state in a continuous flux." He proposed that every living organism lives in a state of unity, so that if there is variation in one part, there must also be variation in all the other parts of the organism. Bergson stressed that evolution is creative and not fatalistic, and that in order to really understand the nature of life, we must use intuition.

Austin's book describes in detail not only Bergson's critique of Darwin, but also Bergson's own evolutionary theory as detailed in his book Creative Evolution, which was published in 1907. In examining the many different evolutionary theories that have been put forth in the last century, including Neodarwinism and Intelligent Design, Austin also addresses how God relates to the evolutionary process.

Readers who believe the creation of man was the design of God and not just a hapless mutation by blind chance will especially enjoy this book. But anyone with a vested interest in evolution, including natural scientists, philosophers and cosmologists, will find value here.
