CSSi Generates 470% Increase in Patient Recruitment for Struggling Clinical Sites in Dermatology Study

CSSi intervention led to successful closing of study enrollment two weeks ahead of schedule.

GLEN BURNIE, Md., April 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — CSSi, the leader in patient recruitment solutions for the clinical research industry, recently partnered with a major pharmaceutical company to prevent an anticipated reduction in the rate of patient enrollment for a dermatology study. So successful was CSSi's intervention through its patient enrollment and site performance program that it was able to increase enrollment more than 4.5 times at lower performing sites, successfully closing the study enrollment timeline two weeks ahead of schedule with previously struggling sites seeing a 470% increase in enrollment.

The study sponsor brought in CSSi after anticipating a particular problem that would see enrollment slowing down due to patients not wanting to endure visible side effects from the study medication during the holidays and not wanting to forgo wearing make-up during the holiday season. CSSi was tasked with increasing the enrollment rate at poorer performing sites so that the overall enrollment goals were hit within their allotted timeline despite this challenge foreseen by the sponsor.

Site performance has long been an industry issue typically with 20-30% of sites being high performers while 20-30% of the sites will have very little or no enrollment activity. This was the case with this dermatology study. After one month of activity, nine of the twenty-seven sites (33%) were considered high performers, averaging 10.22 patients enrolled per site. The other eighteen sites were considered "troubled" sites and had only enrolled an average of 2.56 patients per site.  The enrollment rate was increased by 4.5 times at these sites once CSSi began services.

CSSi was able to save time by quickly revitalizing recruitment tools from the sponsor's past protocol, turning a normal six-week process into two weeks. Following that, a member of our Local Enrollment Specialist™ (LES) team worked closely with each site to determine the best plan of action for increasing their enrollment performance— specifically, reaching individuals that were most likely to be viable candidates for enrollment.

As a result of CSSi's focus on assisting "troubled sites" with their enrollment performance, CSSi assisted this sponsor with meeting their study enrollment goal over two weeks ahead of schedule during a very difficult time to recruit and enroll.  The anticipated slow down did not occur and the enrollment goal was met on January 14, 2014.
