The Cyprus-U.S. Chamber of Commerce Names Dr. Ernest Jeffrey Moniz, U.S. Secretary of Energy, Recipient of the Chamber's Distinguished Merit Award

Awards dinner and ceremony will take place on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at the Hilton New York

NEW YORK, Dec. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The Cyprus-U.S. Chamber of Commerce (www.cyprususchamber.com) is pleased to announce that Dr. Ernest Jeffrey Moniz, Secretary of Energy of the United States is the Chamber's 2013 Distinguished Merit Award recipient.

Bestowed annually, the Award honors corporations and individuals who have raised the profile of Cyprus and made an extraordinary contribution in strengthening trade relations between Cyprus and the United States of America. The Cyprus-U.S. Chamber of Commerce's tribute to Dr. Moniz will include an Awards Dinner at the Hilton New York on Thursday, December 12, 2013.

Dr. Ernest Jeffrey Moniz is an American nuclear physicist and the current and the 13th United States Secretary of Energy, serving under President Barack Obama since May, 2013. He previously served  as the Associate Director for Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of President Bill Clinton from 1995 to 1997 and in the United States Department of Energy, serving as Under Secretary of Energy, from 1997 to 2001.  Moniz joined the faculty of MIT in 1973, serving as Head of the Department of Physics from 1991 to 1995 and as Director of the Bates Linear Accelerator Center.

Dr. Moniz is one of the founding members of The Cyprus Institute a collaboration agreement between the Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and headed a joint research endeavour on the strategic choices available in relation to the hydrocarbons' reserves in Cyprus' exclusive economic zone.  Cyprus awarded Dr. Moniz in 2008 with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III for his contribution to research, technology and education.  As a founding member  of the Cyprus Institute he contributed.
