Burgess is a highly sought-after professional development speaker well known for his outrageously energetic and creative style. His presentations inspire and motivate educators, and provide practical strategies to dramatically improve instruction. He is the author of Teach Like a PIRATE: Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity, and Transform Your Life as an Educator and co-author of P is for PIRATE: Inspirational ABCs for Educators. As a teacher at West Hills High School in San Diego, Burgess was the 2001 and 2012 Golden Apple recipient and the 2007/2008 Teacher of the Year. At a ceremony in Washington D.C., the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences awarded him the 2014 BAMMY for Secondary School Teacher of the Year.

Also presenting a motivational keynote session at the conference is best-selling author, slam poet, and teacher-advocate Taylor Mali. Mali is one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement and is the author of the widely-popular and influential book, What Teachers Make: In Praise of the Greatest Job in the World. He is a vocal advocate of teachers, having spent nine years in the classroom teaching everything from English and history to math and S.A.T. test preparation. He has performed and lectured for teachers all over the world, and his 12-year long Quest for One Thousand Teachers, completed in April of 2012, helped create 1,000 new teachers through "poetry, persuasion, and perseverance."

As part of the world's largest differentiated instruction (DI) conference, Burgess, Mali, and 50 of their DI and content-area expert colleagues will help teachers of grades K-12 discover real, relevant differentiated instruction that will maximize learning for all students and reignite their passion for the classroom. This four-day event inspires educators to bring DI to the forefront of their instructional practice. With a focus on foundational, next steps, and grade-specific strategies, this conference promises to deliver core instructional principles and activities that make learning appropriate for each child, regardless of current ability or skill level.

The National Conference on Differentiated Instruction is also a destination for administrators, with sessions that speak to their specific needs, and allow educators to leave with a renewed sense of purpose and motivation for what they do. Attendees will learn how to manage the current challenges in administration including evaluation, student assessment, school climate and culture, and more. With an entire track devoted to administrators, the conference is rich in content with direct application.

The DI conference is one of eight national conferences that SDE hosts each summer, divided between Las Vegas, Chicago, and Orlando. The DI conference features two pre-conference events, the Administrator Summit, and Power-Up!, both requiring separate registration.
