First launched in 2006, One Day U's annual Fall Full-Day event now draws nearly 3000 "adult students" (mostly 50+). These individuals believe that learning is a lifelong pursuit and are attracted by the company's unique message: "No tests. No homework. No stress. Just the pure joy of learning."

The irrepressibly curious, baby-boom professionals, retirees, and even recent grads are all given the opportunity to go back to college for a single day. One Day University professors are chosen primarily because they are the most popular on campus. They're the professors who entertain as well as teach. The disciplines that will be covered at the event mirror those that would be found in a traditional liberal arts curriculum, including History, Psychology, Music, Science, Politics, Economics, and Philosophy.

Professors and their 1-Hour Classes:

  1. Thomas Kelly / Harvard  – Beethoven's Ninth: The Story Behind the Masterpiece
  2. Rachel Friedberg / Brown – The Rise of the Ultra-Wealthy
  3. Paul Bloom / Yale – The Science of Pleasure: Why We Like What We Like
  4. Anna Celenza / Georgetown – Gershwin, Ellington, and the Search for the American Sound
  5. David Helfand / Columbia – What We Know About the Universe (and what we don't)
  6. Catherine Sanderson / Amherst – The Psychology of Persuasion
  7. Jacques deLisle / Penn – China and the United States: Peaceful Co-Existence or Dangerous Rivalry?
  8. Stephen Whitfield / Brandeis – National Security vs. Freedom of Expression
  9. Sidney Milkis / Virginia – The Presidency of Thomas Jefferson: What's Fact, What's Fiction?
  10. Steve Wang / Swarthmore – How We Know What We Don't Know: Using Statistics to Uncover the Unknown
  11. Jennifer Lawless / American – Why Public Opinion Polls are so Often Wrong
  12. Jean-Marc Oppenheim / Columbia & Fordham – The Middle East and the Arab Spring: Three Years On
  13. David Denby / Tufts – Free Will: What is It, and Do We Have it?

Time: 9:30am – 4:30pm
Location: NY Hilton, 1335 6th Ave

According to One Day University Founder and Director many adults who have been out of college for years would love to go back, even for a single day or just a few times a year. "Realistically, we know most people don't have time to make a semester-long commitment—nor do they want to—and that's why this concept works so well."

As the baby-boom generation matures, the demand for such experiences is blossoming. According to the Department of Education, a full 46 percent of the U.S. adult population will enroll in continuing education courses this year—up from 40 percent ten years ago. Many will sign up for "personal interest" classes rather than for career building or job training classes. In fact, One Day University promises students they won't learn how to invest in real estate or improve their work skills. Instead, they will experience the joys of higher education, and gain some great fodder for their next cocktail hour.
