Eyewitness account to tour SF Bay Area for 25th anniversary of Loma Prieta disaster

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Where were you at 5:04 p.m. on October 17, 1989?

Jon Leonoudakis, a San Francisco native and lifelong Giants fan, was inside Candlestick Park with his brother Tim, waiting for the start of Game 3 of the 1989 World Series. Twenty-nine minutes before game time, Mother Nature delivered a knockdown pitch for the ages: the largest earthquake to strike a major American city in nearly a century.

A filmmaker by trade, Jon arrived at the stadium with a VHS camcorder and a Canon still camera to record the pageantry and excitement of his first World Series game.  He left with a gripping account of every heart-stopping moment at Candlestick that day, as well as the Loma Prieta quake's aftermath and the resumption of Game Three ten days later.

Mixing archival news clips with his personal footage and photographs, Leonoudakis presents a unique and personal perspective, exploring themes of fandom, family, civic pride, baseball and the Bay Area's triumph over tragedy.

The film's narrative features fifty years in the life of a baseball fan and eyewitness to this unprecedented event in American history. From the young lad dreaming of glory for his hometown baseball team in the sixties, to the grown man struggling to comprehend his experience in the maelstrom of a natural disaster, Jon's visceral account hits home.

Jon will present the forty-three minute documentary and the remarkable twenty-five year journey to create it on October 14, 2014, at the San Francisco Main Library. Subsequent screenings will be presented at libraries in San Mateo County from October 15 – 21. The film makes its Los Angeles premiere November 7 at the South Pasadena Library. All screenings are free and open to the public.
