DCL Announces Its Collaboration with Elsevier to Enrich Millions of Documents for the Scopus Database

Collaboration will enhance references for 2.65 million archived articles by the end of 2014

FRESH MEADOWS, N.Y., July 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL), an industry leader in organizing and converting content into digital formats, announced today its collaboration with Elsevier, a world-leading publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, as their new partner in a multi-year conversion initiative to enrich and enhance content on the Scopus database.

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database for peer-reviewed research literature in the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts & humanities, delivering a comprehensive overview of global scientific output. The Scopus Cited References Expansion Program underlines both companies' characteristic dedication to uncompromising standards in creating top quality content.

The immediate goal is to enrich content coverage and the density of linked citations for the Elsevier archive within the Scopus database, consisting of approximately 2.5 million articles published prior to 1996. DCL has created an automated process to split citations into component parts and create fully tagged, fully searchable citations up to the latest industry best-practices. The scalable process, tailored to Elsevier's requirements, is capable of processing millions of records consistently and accurately. The added granularity of the data will allow articles to be more findable and increase the number of times work is cited, a boon for numerous academics, scientists, and technology professionals who depend on Elsevier for professional development.

"Adding cited references to pre-1996 articles in Scopus is of great importance to our users. It will allow for thorough measurement of impact and trend analysis of pre-1996 content using the Scopus database. Accurately processing and tagging the cited references in a highly automated fashion is key to making this program successful and bringing value to our users in a timely manner," said Wim Meester, Head of Product Management for Content Strategy at Elsevier.

With over 30 years of experience organizing, converting, and moving content to modern formats for wider access and new revenue streams, DCL is uniquely positioned to enrich the largest databases. DCL's hybrid mix of automated and manual processes allowed the company to scale its approach to meet the challenges of the Scopus Cited References Expansion Program, and to work with Elsevier quickly with uncompromised quality and accuracy.

"We're delighted to be helping Elsevier in its important efforts to improve access to scholarly materials," Mark Gross, President and CEO of DCL said.  "DCL's automated document analysis and XML tagging techniques are proving to be precisely the right tools to facilitate Elsevier's efforts to mine the gold in its immense repository in an economically feasible manner. With the expanding mountains of data available to researchers, it's critical to refine discovery to better find the nuggets in those millions of files; we're proud to be part of this effort," Gross added.
