Deep Web Technologies Founder and President to Speak on Federated Search and Foreign Language Translation

SANTA FE, N.M., May 14, 2010 — Abe Lederman, founder and President of Deep Web Technologies, will be speaking today at the National Federation of Advanced Information Services (NFAIS) "Improving the User Search Experience" workshop ). Lederman will be delivering a presentation about searching foreign language sources in one's native language with translation of search terms and results. Lederman will speak at 3:15 pm, in the "New and Emerging Technologies" session of the conference. The one-day conference, being held at 300 Market Street in Philadelphia, looks at how the user experience is becoming the real differentiator in modern information solutions.

Lederman's presentation, "Federated Search: Breaking Down the Language Barrier," explains the importance of multilingual search to the global research community, where the resource output of China, Japan, Germany, and other non-English speaking countries is rapidly increasing. The presentation discusses the history of and modern approaches to machine translation, challenges to translation, how the technology works, and who is doing it. The presentation includes a case study of how Deep Web Technologies is extending its federated search application, Explorit, to perform multilingual search in the global science gateway,, improving the search experience for the entire international science community. About Abe Lederman

Abe Lederman has 25 years of experience in computer software engineering. Lederman began his career with Hewlett Packard and was then recruited to become a founding member of Verity, a startup pioneer in the field of search engine technology. In 1994, Lederman left Verity and later founded Innovative Web Applications (IWA), a software consulting firm primarily serving Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). While consulting with LANL and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), Abe came to realize the enormous potential for federated search technology to accelerate the diffusion of knowledge. He founded Deep Web Technologies in 2002. Lederman holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
