U.S. Department of Energy Releases Second Video in Series on How to Write a Successful DOE SBIR/STTR Phase I Grant Application

ROCHESTER, N.Y., July 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) SBIR/STTR Programs has released the second of three videos in its highly anticipated series focused exclusively on writing winning Phase I grant applications in response to DOE's SBIR/STTR Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs).  The series, Successful DOE SBIR/STTR Proposal Writing Tips, highlights three small high-tech R&D companies from across the United States, each with extensive DOE grant writing experience.

The second video was released today and showcases Compact Membrane Systems, a small business located in Newport, Delaware, which takes a unique and well thought out approach to developing its DOE SBIR/STTR applications. The video, which can be viewed at http://www.dawnbreaker.com/doephase0/cms.php, is part of a 3-video series that aims to dissect the complex process of reviewing topics and developing a responsive application to these highly competitive grants.

"As part of the DOE Phase 0 Outreach and Assistance program, we wanted to capture and share this insight with novice small businesses who consistently ask us how to best prepare an SBIR Phase I application," says Chris O'Gwin, SBIR/STTR Commercialization & Outreach Assistance Program Manager at DOE. "We believe this video series is a great way to help these small businesses and to hear first-hand how successful firms address their grant application writing strategies."

Compact Membrane Systems has been in business since 1993, and understands how to strategize and develop successful SBIR/STTR responses to DOE FOAs. In this video, the father/daughter team of Dr. Stuart Nemser, Founder and Chairman of CMS, and Dr. Erica Nemser, CEO of CMS, address questions such as – What are the steps you take once a topic is released? How do you devise a successful project work plan? And how do you form your Phase I team?

"Each highlighted company in this series offers a unique perspective and approach when it comes to responding to a DOE SBIR/STTR FOA, and we wanted to showcase their varying methods," explains Jenny C. Servo, Ph.D., President of Dawnbreaker, which administers the Phase 0 Program for DOE. "By sitting down and discussing the components of both successful and non successful proposals, small businesses are better equipped to handle the sometimes complex process of proposal preparation.
