Three Distinct 5G Architectures and 5G Cost Estimates

New Document by Mobile Experts To Enable 5G ROI Calculations

CAMPBELL, Calif., June 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Mobile Experts released the next document in their 5G series today, defining and illustrating 5G Architectures. This particular study investigates the likely network architecture and mobile terminal design for selected business scenarios, making it possible to estimate the cost of specific 5G services.

Principal Analyst Joe Madden explained that, "While 5G is a popular label, it doesn't mean much without a lot of deeper explanation…In reality, '5G' is a grouping of multiple distinct use cases.   We think that each use case needs to justify itself with a return on investment, before the industry invests billions of dollars to develop it."

"Ultra-broadband applications will use Massive MIMO and millimeter-wave bands, with a push toward very high spectral efficiency and density of traffic.  On the other hand, machine-type communications will focus on cost and reliability, and very different radio solutions will be used.  In all cases, we expect significant re-use of 4G investments.  Don't expect the 5G roll-out to look anything like the investments in 2G through 4G, because the 5G solutions will piggyback on top of the 4G network, allowing deployment to be gradual and incremental in some cases."

Mobile Experts examines three major focus areas in this report.  Many white papers have been published by other companies referencing more than 15 different use cases, and many people have described a need for low latency, high throughput, high density, high availability, and many other factors.  In this report, Mobile Experts uniquely refuses to assume that all of these factors are necessary.  Instead, the company approaches 5G from the business point of view, and illustrates '5G' architectures that minimize cost without adding pricey, additional features until they are absolutely necessary.

The 5G Architectures document outlines three major architectural directions:

  1. Ultra-Broadband (UBB)
  2. Critical Machine-Type Communications (Critical MTC)
  3. Massive Machine-Type Communications (Massive MTC)

Because the radio solutions are so different, the end-to-end cost of various 5G services will be very different as well. This study concludes with cost estimates for each business scenario, to help mobile operators to decide on 5G investment directions.
