Face Confrontations with Authors' 72 Tips

Getting what you want isn't as painful as it may seem

WHITE STONE, Va., May 19, 2010 — Have you ever seen a slacker co-worker ignored or relocated rather than dealt with? Have you watched a friend allow a relationship to wither because she couldn't share her true feelings with her boyfriend?

Are you avoiding a situation because you fear a confrontation will result?

Everyone struggles with finding the right words at times. In their new book, "What to Say and How to Say It: 72 Courageous Conversations for the Workplace," authors William and Carolyn Hines share tips that anyone can apply professionally, personally and as consumers and citizens in daily life. The book is published by iUniverse.

"It's a proven fact that the best communicators are not the best talkers. They are the best listeners," the Hineses write. "Remember that people are rational from their point of view, no matter how weird they may seem to you."

Having these conversations take courage. The Hineses share tips on planning for what you want to say, determining what you want the outcome of your conversation to be, and choosing the best words to use to achieve your goals.

All of us have thought of a response after the fact, one that would require courage to utter. But how do you go about returning to an issue that seems closed? The authors show you how to approach the individual and open the door to giving your response.

The book is based on the brain and behavior research of New York Times science writer Daniel Goleman, who argued that emotions play a large role in decision-making and individual success. The Hineses show how to apply Goleman's theories of "emotional intelligence" to improve the relationships in every aspect of your life.
