New Forbes College Ranking Mimics Findings from StateUniversity.com

FLOSSMOOR, Ill., Aug. 13, 2009 — Forbes magazine's recent America's Best Colleges report shares many similarities with the StateUniversity.com college rankings, which were released in February of this year at http://www.stateuniversity.com/rank/score_rank.html. Nine of the Forbes top 10 colleges appear in the StateUniversity.com top 25.

The United States Military Academy at West Point, which captured the #1 position in the Forbes report, was ranked 6th overall by StateUniversity.com. Other schools that ranked well in both lists are:

Stanford University — #1 on StateUniversity.com and #10 in Forbes
Princeton University — #3 on StateUniversity.com; #2 in Forbes
California Institute of Technology — #5 on StateUniversity.com and #3 in Forbes
Amherst College — #7 on StateUniversity.com; #8 in Forbes
Williams College — #9 on StateUniversity.com and #4 in Forbes
Yale University — #23 on StateUniversity.com; #9 in Forbes
Harvard University — #24 on StateUniversity.com and #5 in Forbes
Wellesley College — #25 on StateUniversity.com; #6 in Forbes

Further, 24 of the top 25 schools in the Forbes list also appeared in the top five percent of StateUniversity.com's list. The only exception was United States Air Force Academy, which Forbes ranked 7th out of 600 and StateUniversity.com ranked 166th out of 2000 (which still puts it in the top eight percent of schools).

Dominik Mazur, founder of StateUniversity.com, said, "It's nice to see the similarities between the two ranking reports. When a well-established media organization like Forbes comes up with findings similar to ours, it's a validating experience." Mazur continued, "It's very interesting that, even with differences in methodology, many schools ranked well in both lists."

Unlike other popular college ranking reports, neither StateUniversity.com nor the Forbes report are based on peer assessment – colleges' ratings of other colleges. The StateUniversity.com rankings are based upon statistical factors determined to be most important to the overall quality of education, including student-teacher ratio and academic rigor. Forbes has stated that its rankings are based upon student satisfaction surveys, postgraduate success, and other factors.
