Glencoe Software to Support the ASCB 'Stimulus Grant' to Build Virtual Image Library of the Cell

SEATTLE, Nov. 4, 2009 — Glencoe Software, Inc., the commercial arm of the Open Microscopy Environment (OME) Consortium (http://openmicroscopy.org), is proud to announce its collaboration with the American Society of Cell Biology's exciting new project titled "The Cell: An Image Library." The ASCB has been awarded a $2.5M stimulus grant through the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Grand Opportunities program, as part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, to build a novel multi-dimensional image library of the cell. This online resource of digital images will serve, and be freely available to, multiple end-users across research, clinical, educational and public communities internationally.

Key to the success of the project is the ability to read, manage and display many different types of scientific image data supplied to the project by the research community. Researchers use dozens of different microscope hardware and software instruments to produce specialized three-dimensional images of cells. The Glencoe Software Data Management Engine, an enterprise scientific image data management system based on the OME Consortium open source OMERO Platform, is designed to read and interpret these images with all corresponding metadata, and importantly, allows for the interactive visualization and management of large image repositories.

Joan R. Goldberg, Executive Director of the ASCB, said, "The ASCB is proud to be leading the development of this new project and is excited to be leveraging open source technology developed within the academic community to deliver this critical resource for the research community."

Jason Swedlow, CEO of Glencoe Software, and co-founder of the OME, said, "Glencoe Software and OME see the ASCB Image Library as a critical resource for life science researchers all over the world. We are pleased that our recent work on OMERO and the Glencoe DME is being deployed in this challenging application. Combined with our deployment of the JCB DataViewer (http://jcb-dtaviewer.rupress.org), this demonstrates the capabilities of OMERO and the Glencoe DME and further solidifies our industry-leading capabilities to deliver complex image data management solutions to the Life Science research community."

Glencoe Software (http://glencoesoftware.com) provides customized solutions for the Bioimage Informatics Community in two unique areas: image data management for scientific digital imaging in light microscopy and high content screening platforms; and full content image data submission and visualization for scientific publishing. Glencoe Software is the exclusive commercial provider of the technology platform from the OME Consortium to deliver customized image data management solutions for its customers. The collaborative development of an online Image Library of the Cell with the ASCB is another step towards Glencoe Software's goal of providing novel data management solutions to assure access and integrity of critical image data for the life sciences community.
