Google Consumer Study Measures Workplace Ageism & Entrepreneur Readiness

Poll sponsored by CatchFire Funding finds a third of 45-to-54 year olds have been victimized by ageism; approximately one in six consider self-employment.

PARKER, Colo., Oct. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — A Google Consumer Survey of more than 350 Americans has found that 33.5% of respondents (ages 45 to 54) feel they've been a victim of workplace ageism, while 15% of those forced into early retirement say they would go into business for themselves.

The survey, conducted in Fall 2014 and sponsored by CatchFire Funding, points out the disconnect between the reality of older adults being moved out of corporate America, and their potential earning power through entrepreneurship and business ownership, such as franchises.

"It's the best second chance that most mid-career Americans never saw coming," says William Seagraves, founder of CatchFire Funding, a Parker, CO-based firm dedicated to assisting clients in unlocking their financial solutions for business and franchise ownership.

The Google Consumer Survey sheds light on a trend that Seagraves has been observing for the past five years. "Each week, I am contacted by people who have been 'involuntarily laid off,' and are desperately looking for a viable solution," he says.

"They feel business ownership is an option, but they're scared to death because they aren't exactly young anymore. But in actuality, they're in an advantageous position to be an entrepreneur because of their experience and vast network of contacts."

The first Baby Boomers reached retirement age in 2011, but millions of them are still in their 50s, raising families and paying mortgages and college tuitions. With the decline of pensions and financial markets taking a hit during the recession, many Boomers are now faced with less income and a potentially earlier retirement than they planned.
