Robbins thought his life was over when he blew out his pitching arm, a heartbreaking ending to his promising professional baseball career with the Kansas City Royals. What do you do when the dream you've had all your life is suddenly over, and there's no Plan B? The worst blow for Robbins, was that when it was over, he realized that he hadn't really appreciated the experience while it was happening — he was always focused on the next goal, finally making it to the big leagues. But instead of living in the past, or living with regret, Robbins vowed to never make that mistake again.

He reinvented himself and turned adversity into triumph — speaking all over the country about the importance of appreciation and authenticity, and helping others to make meaningful changes in their lives and work. Robbins' latest book, Nothing Changes Until You Do: A Guide to Self-Compassion and Getting Out of Your Own Way, is a testament to reinvention, helping readers bypass the fears and obstacles we all encounter when facing change.

"That experience taught me a lot," Robbins said. "It's not the circumstances. It's you."

Now, he finds himself back where it all began, still deeply connected to the sport that he loves — working with organizations like the San Francisco Giants, Twitter, and Google.

"The need for reinvention is a constant in life, in business, in relationships, in everything," said Robbins.

Leilani Gayles, Chief People Officer of the San Francisco Giants, said, "His powerful message resonates with our players, coaches, and front office staff, which is why we have invited him in to speak numerous times.  He truly has helped us be a championship team."

Why is it harder for men to reinvent themselves?

Robbins said, "It's hard for all of us. There's a unique challenge that a lot of men face. Women are much more flexible, and have an ability to adjust and evolve both in life and in business. Whereas, with men who've been successful on a certain track, haven't had to do that quite as much. In a lot of cases, it's forced upon them.  And if it happens later on in their careers or in life, it can be difficult to adjust."

The rough economy and rapidly changing technology has been a one-two punch that has many men finding they're being left behind.

A Robbins client who's been in his job for 25 years feels like a fish out of water with all the new technology. "I feel like an idiot most of the time, and I'm used to being really good at my job."

Lisa Earle McLeod, creator of the popular business concept, Noble Purpose, said, "So many people are so identified with their jobs, and it feels like that's who they are."

"Technology's changing, the workforce is changing.  It's really about people looking within themselves and finding what's real and what's true and what's important to them so that they can reinvent in the jobs that they're in — or potentially in finding something new to do.  And that's not always the easiest thing," said Robbins.

New York Times best-selling author Tom Rath said, "Mike Robbins uses his personal experience to help all of us see how we can take small steps toward a better life."

"Much of what we attempt to do in life is fairly simple; it's dealing with ourselves that is often most challenging," said Robbins.
