Historic West Hollywood Bungalow: Small Footprint, Big Personality!

LOS ANGELES, May 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — After backpacking through more than 80 countries, screenwriter Seth Resnik has finally settled down into his own private oasis in West Hollywood. Bringing with him a lifetime of objects and photos from his travels and having never lived in one place for over a year, he hired interior designer Sarah Barnard to help overhaul the crumbling 1918 Craftsman bungalow into the outdoor-inspired and eco-conscious home that nature-loving Resnik has always dreamed about.

The process began six years ago when Resnik purchased the bungalow; full of broken windows, layers of odd paint colors, and holes in the roof made the necessity of a total overhaul clear. With the house being historic and also less than 1000 square feet, Resnik had a lot of ideas for his first home and a vast collection of objects and photos from his travels. "I was hoping," he muses, "that somehow I could make a home that had enough of my past to feel safe, enough of my present to feel comfortable, and enough of my dreams to be inspiring." That's how Seth knew he needed Sarah Barnard to help translate his vision into a space that was both functional and a reflection of his personality. Resnik's love of nature is highlighted by the use of eco-friendly and natural materials, such as the recycled beer bottle kitchen counter top, recycled cardboard pendant lamps, and the sun tubes and pebble rocks in both showers that make him "feel like [he's] showering outdoors."

Though he describes the three-year design process as "humbling," it is obvious that the collaboration with Sarah has affected him in a deep way: "Every single person remarks how cool the place is. Even the plumber was gobsmacked. And my friends…just can't believe it. A musician friend [who] hadn't seen the house since it was properly done just wandered from room-to-room, quiet… then said, 'It's ready. You and your space are ready for what comes next.' I loved that."
