HLW Principal Christian Giordano Makes Building Design + Construction's 40 Under 40 Class of 2013

Giordano Joins Prestigious Class of Young High Achievers in the Architectural Industry

NEW YORK, Sept. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — HLW is pleased to announce that Christian Giordano has been accepted into Building Design + Construction's 40 Under 40 Class of 2013. Building Design & Construction (BD+C), a national publication, selects 40 professionals in the architectural and building industry each year. Recipients of the highly competitive honor must have demonstrated distinguished achievements in both their professional and personal lives, as well as dedicated their services to professional societies and charitable organizations.

Mr. Giordano is 39 and a Principal and Director of Architectural Design at HLW International. He has more than 15 years of experience in architectural practice in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He specializes in the design of commercial, residential, mixed-use, hospitality and retail architecture.

Giordano was profiled in the May 2013 issue of BD+C. He will be honored at the upcoming "40 Under 40 Summit" in San Francisco. This summit will include a three-day career development workshop from October 9th to October 11th. In addition to the recipients, up-and-coming professionals that were nominated by their firms will also be in attendance.

"From the moment I first met Christian, his passion and knowledge of architecture was evident," said Corey Hennings, Director of Real Estate for Ferring Pharmaceuticals Inc. Giordano was part of the HLW team that provided space planning, interior design, architecture, and landscape architecture for Ferring Pharmaceuticals' new corporate campus in Parsippany, NJ. "This passion and knowledge continued to be right at the forefront of the project we worked on together. The final design will be a long-standing reminder of his skills and ability. He is a true master of his craft."

Steve Lefkowitz, the SVP of Real Estate & Facilities at HBO, identified Giordano's unique attributes as they related to his company's project, "Christian's creative, thoughtful and overall flair for design allowed him to turn a few high level concepts into a living, breathing state-of-the-art facility. The challenge was to maintain our campus-like setting, while adding an additional 53,000 square feet. His innovative approach and use of the existing topography allowed us to construct the majority of the new building below ground, an unusual and highly innovative solution. We were able to connect to our existing building via an underground tunnel and to integrate a large green roof that complemented the overall objective. Christian is a true professional, a focused team player, and a top notch, visionary architect."

In recent years, Giordano has been instrumental in rebuilding HLW's base building design portfolio. Perhaps most impressive is the fact that he accomplished this during a recession and in an industry focused on interiors. He has designed a number of high-rise residential and mixed-use towers, including the 27-story Hilton Grand Vacations Club on West 57th Street in Manhattan.

In addition to architecture, HLW is known for its creative workplace design on the projects it has completed in the past century. The international design practice has a notable track record for adapting and innovating in response to larger economic, technological or societal changes. In the 1980s, for instance, HLW was at the forefront of the professionalization of interior design. In 2005, when Giordano arrived at HLW, he already had experience working with two top architecture and interior design firms. His significant contribution was to complement the strategic work being done by his HLW colleagues in identifying and using quantitative and qualitative workplace data, with a similar user-centered and holistic approach to base-building design. Giordano has reshaped how his colleagues and professional peers think about engaging in a truly holistic and collaborative design process involving all disciplines.
