Dr. Zach LaBoube Explains How Over-Eating on Thanksgiving Could Kickstart Your Weight Loss Program

Revision of the HCG diet requires dieters to overload on fatty foods as part of a contemporary weight loss program.

DALLAS, Nov. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — For most people, the idea of beginning a weight loss program on Thanksgiving sounds absurd. Thanksgiving is a holiday for eating, and eating to excess. But what if there was a diet that required over-eating on high-fat foods for two days in order to jump-start a low-calorie diet? It sounds crazy, but one new diet is breaking all the rules and creating a smarter way to lose.

HCG 2.0 was authored by Dr. Zach LaBoube, founder of InsideOut Wellness and Weight Loss. Like the traditional HCG diet, HCG 2.0 requires the dieter to over-load on fatty foods for two days prior to beginning the low-calorie protocol of the diet that lasts anywhere from 30 to 40 days, depending on one's weight loss goals.

So why over-eat on fatty foods in an attempt to lose weight? Keep in mind that human physiology exists for our long term survival and only in the last 60 to 70 years has the human species had to deal with an overabundant food supply. As a result, our physiology is still hard-wired to retain calories in the form of fat in order to survive long winters or famine – conditions that rarely exist today.  Any sudden decrease in calories, such as that which occurs during dieting, can alarm the body into "starvation mode." During starvation mode, your body actually becomes more efficient with its calories and more determined to store them away in fat tissue, assuming that there is a scarcity in food.  This is why dieting is so difficult. Not only are we battling our own poor eating habits, but a physiological pre-disposition to accumulate fat.

Loading on fatty foods for two days causes your liver enzymes to spike, which is theorized to prevent the body from entering starvation mode. By the time your liver enzymes return to normal levels, the HCG has already tapped into your fat reserves and is providing you with supplemental ketone calories thus bypassing starvation mode and facilitating more rapid weight loss. What better time to over-load on fats than Thanksgiving.

"The two loading days are a very significant part of this diet and if not done properly you won't get the exaggerated weight loss so common in the early stages of this diet. It's not uncommon to lose 10-15 pounds in the first week or two. And what better time over-eat than Thanksgiving. Might as well eat with a purpose," said Dr. LaBoube.

In contrast to the traditional HCG diet, HCG 2.0 recommends that dieters get a good balance of Omega 3 fats to Omega 6 fats, ideally a 1:1 ratio. Also in contrast to the traditional HCG diet, HCG 2.0 uses a BMR calculation to determine the amount of protein calories on the low-calorie phase of your diet. This is a stark variation to the original HCG diet that allows dieters only 500 calories, whether male or female, big or small. "It's really important to get an adequate amount of protein on any weight loss plan. If you're not, you'll lose muscle mass, but retain all of the fat. This is counter-productive and this is the problem with the traditional HCG diet. We're all different so we all have different protein demands. HCG 2.0 accommodates that," said Dr. LaBoube.
