Infertility: Debilitating Disease or Extraordinary Opportunity?

Priceless Lessons In-Fertility Blog Series Marks 20th Anniversary of Fertility Advocate's Diagnosis

WOODSTOCK, N.Y., April 4, 2012 — This year's National Infertility Awareness Week (April 22-28) has special meaning for fertility advocate Julia Indichova, the 62-year-old author of Inconceivable, the first book about infertility written by a patient.

Indichova marks this year's National Infertility Awareness Week with a new blog series sponsored by Fertile Heart, a global community founded by Indichova in 1997. The series, titled, "Priceless Lessons In-Fertility," is available at http://alturl.com/wk7m8.

It was twenty years ago on April 26, 1992 when Indichova was diagnosed with irreversible secondary infertility, a diagnosis that sparked a pilgrimage of research and self-examination. After conceiving her daughter without medical intervention and giving birth at age 44, the mysteries of fertility became her life's work.

The "Priceless Lessons In-Fertility" blog series intends to raise awareness about the opportunities for transformation that result from a fertility challenge and features guest blog posts by alumni of the Fertile Heart™ Ovum Program, a health-enhancing mind/body process documented in Indichova's second book, The Fertile Female: How the Power of Longing for a Child Can Save Your Life and Change the World.

The Fertile Heart™ Ovum Program uses food, lifestyle adjustments, carefully crafted visualizations and movement to address underlying causes of infertility.

Amanda Queally, the first featured blogger, conceived her daughter Annabelle naturally after 5 years of failed medical treatment and an ectopic pregnancy that caused her to lose one of her fallopian tubes. In her blog post, Queally credits The Ovum Program tools as a new form of fertility treatment and one that demanded more of her.

"I couldn't just show up at a doctor's office and have a procedure that I hoped would work, or simply pop a pill to boost the number of eggs I would release," says Queally.

While Indichova recognizes the advantages of medical testing and intervention for those unable to conceive, having witnessed the journeys of thousands of women, she believes assisted reproductive techniques are too often used to silence the body's call for help.

In a culture with a strong taste for abdicating decision-making to experts, the Ovum Program empowers women to reclaim the art of inquiring, feeling and choosing for themselves.

"There were times when everybody, including my parents, was pressuring me to do In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), take some Clomid or try something else. I'm glad I stood my ground and followed what felt right for me. I am a very different person because of it and I am a very different mom," says Maria Bono, another "Priceless Lessons" blogger, now pregnant with her second child.

Leslie Zarra, the 45-year-old president of Cliff Young, Ltd. found the Fertile Heart Ovum Program after six failed IVF treatments and years of heartache. Zarra shares the story of conceiving her daughter Isabella at age 42 with minimal medical intervention, hoping to inspire women to avoid some of the mistakes she made and if need be, use assisted reproduction in a way that doesn't harm them physically or emotionally.

The most recent Center for Disease Control success rates published in 2009 range from 41% in women younger than 35 to 5% in women 43-44.

"At a time when couples spend up to $200,000 on repeated Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) cycles with questionable side effects and no guarantees of pregnancy, they should know that there are many ways to reclaim fertility and give birth to a healthy generation of babies," says Indichova.
