International Math Expert Dr. Yeap Ban Har to Keynote National K-6 Mathematics Conference

LAS VEGAS and PETERBOROUGH, N.H., May 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Staff Development for Educators (SDE) has announced that education expert and best-selling author Dr. Yeap Ban Har will be the keynote speaker at their annual National Conference on Singapore Math Strategies taking place July 18-22, 2016 in Las Vegas. Ban Har will address more than 700 math teachers and administrators from across the U.S. and the world at the enlightening and inspiring keynote event.

Ban Har is a gifted mathematician and inspirational speaker of high international demand. A native of Singapore, he has taught Singapore Math at various grade levels in both primary and secondary schools and currently teaches mathematics education courses at the National Institute of Education, a teacher education institute in Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His research interests include problem solving and problem posing, early numeracy, and teacher professional development. Ban Har is the author of several books for primary and pre-school children and has written several mathematics textbooks based on the Singapore Mathematics approach, as well as articles and chapters in various mathematics education publications.

Also presenting at the conference is math expert, educator, and author Eliza Thomas. Eliza has taught students in a multi-age classroom, a traditional classroom, in a specialist setting, and in a content specific classroom. In addition to her classroom experience, she has presented locally and at the state and national level on a myriad of topics. Eliza has served as a Math TOSA (teacher on special assignment) and has taught math at grade levels Nursery through Math Methods for Elementary Teachers at the collegiate level as an adjunct professor. Currently, she supports districts with writing and refining curriculum, creating pacing and curriculum maps, developing common assessments, increasing background knowledge through vocabulary, as well as supporting teachers with their personal math development and their classroom instruction through ongoing and sustainable professional development. Eliza is passionate about creating relationships through teacher and student engagement, expecting rigor in research-based instruction using promising practices, and establishing relevance within content.

As part of the National Conference on Singapore Math Strategies, Ban Har, Thomas, and 16 of their math expert colleagues will help teachers of grades K-6 transform their math instruction through best math practices, regardless of curriculum. This four-day event instructs educators on new and exciting math lessons and activities, and offers real-world connections with fellow math teachers and coaches.

The conference is one of eight national conferences that SDE hosts each summer, divided between Las Vegas, Chicago, and Orlando. The conference features two pre-conference events, the Administrator Summit, and Power-Up!, both requiring separate registration.
