International Peer-Reviewed Paper on Wind Power Performance Published in Leading Energy Journal

Collaboration between SheerWind and the City College of New York describes how a new concept in wind harnessing significantly outperforms traditional wind turbines and reduces cost

MINNEAPOLIS, June 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — SheerWind and City College of New York announce their peer-reviewed paper has been released in Energy-The International Journal. The paper "INVELOX: Description of a new concept in wind power and its performance evaluation" was co-authored by Dr. Daryoush Allaei, SheerWind and Professor Yiannis Andreopoulos City College of New York.

"The computational results and field test results continually outperform our expectations," stated Professor Yiannis Andreopoulos. "We look forward to continuing our work with Dr. Allaei and his team to discover the full potential of this exciting new way to harvest wind energy."

Highlights from the paper include:

  • A new wind energy harnessing concept is described.
  • Models of the flow by using computational fluid dynamics for turbulent flows is presented.
  • Field measurements in a prototype are shown.
  • Results indicate very little sensitivity to wind direction.
  • Greater power output has been measured in comparison to conventional wind turbines.

In the paper, a new concept in wind power harnessing is described, which significantly outperforms traditional wind turbines of the same diameter and aerodynamic characteristics under the same wind conditions and delivers significantly higher output, at reduced cost. Its first innovative feature is the elimination of tower-mounted turbines. The second is that it captures wind flow through an omnidirectional intake and thereby there is no need for passive or active yaw controls. Third, it accelerates the flow within a shrouded Venturi section and released into the ambient environment through a diffuser. INVELOX provides solutions to all the major problems that have so far undermined the wind industry, such as low turbine reliability, intermittency issues and adverse environmental and radar impact. The results show that it is possible to capture, accelerate and concentrate the wind. Increased wind velocities result in significant improvement in the power output. View Full Paper

"It is gratifying to share our findings with the world in peer-reviewed publications such as Energy. We have found the answers to the issues that have plagued the wind power industry for years. Using commercially available generators and turbines with much smaller blades inside the INVELOX systems is a win for those already in the wind industry. Not to mention our lower cost wind power generation systems allow installation in a much wider geographical range than ever possible with conventional wind mills," said Dr. Allaei of SheerWind.

About SheerWind

SheerWind's INVELOX technology is changing the course of power generation. The patented electricity generation system successfully funnels wind to control and accelerate wind speed allowing wind to be harvested at its optimum state of energy. Thus producing more power with much smaller turbines and blades, located safely at ground level. Operating at low wind speeds, SheerWind's INVELOX requires no subsidies, is price competitive with traditional energy and has far less environmental impact than traditional generation technologies. The electric power generation market globally exceeds $1 trillion. The high performance and efficiency capabilities of INVELOX offer a global renewable energy solution that easily integrates with the power grid for small and commercial operations.
