Kentucky Medical Services Foundation Completes Successful Charge Capture Technology Conversion

MedAptus' Practice Plus Edition Experiences Enthusiastic Adoption Across 40 Specialties in Prominent Academic Setting

BOSTON, Jan. 7, 2009 — MedAptus(R), market leader for charge capture technologies, today announced that Kentucky Medical Services Foundation, Inc. (KMSF) has successfully implemented Professional Intelligent Charge Capture for more than 250 physician-users. The completion of this first phase of KMSF's staggered deployment means that a successful replacement of the organization's existing charge capture system has been accomplished.

KMSF, based in Lexington, is the faculty practice plan for the highly regarded University of Kentucky Hospital System, UK HealthCare and the College of Medicine. The group provides billing and other administrative services to more than 600 providers affiliated with UK HealthCare. KMSF initially adopted mobile charge capture technology several years ago, but contracted with MedAptus in late 2007 after determining that the incumbent solution no longer met UK HealthCare's strategic IT needs.

MedAptus' Practice Plus Edition is a powerful yet easy-to-use electronic charge capture solution proven to mitigate potential professional revenue loss, compliance overhead and lack of billing process transparency. The solution is seamlessly integrated with several scheduling, billing, registration and electronic medical records systems. At KMSF, MedAptus is integrated with applications from vendors that include Siemens Medical Solutions, McKesson Corporation and HMS.

The first KMSF physician users of Practice Plus were live on the mobile system in early 2008. The "Phase I" of the group's implementation approach – converting all users of the previous charge capture system to MedAptus – was achieved in a matter of months. The technology, accessed from both cellular and non-cellular devices, currently processes more than 20,000 monthly charges, outpatient and inpatient, across over 40 different clinical areas at UK HealthCare.

"Having utilized a competitive charge capture product for years, I can say that MedAptus has been a joy to use. The system's connectivity, regardless of my physical location, has made billing easier while real-time census updates allow me to find my patients on rounds efficiently. I would never go back to paper," said William O. Shaffer, MD, Professor, Vice-Chairman, Medical Director & Residency Program Director at University of Kentucky. Dr. Shaffer added that the MedAptus RCA Engine is excellent for managing clinics and providing assurance that accurate charges have been captured.

KMSF will shortly embark on its "Phase II" of implementation which encompasses an additional 150 clinician users. Once deployment to the entire provider base has been completed, efforts will shift to deploying MedAptus' integrated Dictation offering.

"We are thrilled to have Phase I behind us, particularly considering the aggressive nature of our rollout. Though we remain in the early stages, we've realized a number of significant benefits. We are already experiencing more accurate and timely charge capture. Our physicians are able to enter charges from multiple locations – two hospital facilities, their local clinical practice site, and from their 'traveling' clinic locales. Our coders have a single access point to work all edited charges. And as an added benefit, we have been able to establish more standardization of charge processes and workflows across the clinical departments," said Peggy Halcomb, Associate Director of KMSF.

According to Darrell Griffith, Executive Director of KMSF, "We are anxious to proceed with Phases II and III of our MedAptus implementation plan which will include an additional 350 providers. With the growth of UK HealthCare and the expansion of our services into the communities surrounding Lexington, we needed a tool that would allow our physicians to optimize revenue in a paperless and secure environment. MedAptus is that tool. We look forward to a long-standing partnership with the MedAptus team of professionals."

"MedAptus has almost ten years of implementation experience in academic medical settings. As such, our approach to deployment in complex environments has been refined and proven to yield enterprise success. Our track record with large organizations is solid with hallmarks that include top-notch project management, flexible technology and a commitment to collaborative thinking," said Rick Little, MedAptus Executive Director of Client Services.
