Kessler Institute Named One of America's Best Rehabilitation Hospitals

Nation's largest rehabilitation hospital ranked #2 in the country; tops in the East by U.S.News & World Report

WEST ORANGE, N.J., July 24, 2012 — Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation (www.kessler-rehab.com) has again been ranked as one of the top two rehabilitation hospitals in the country and as the leading facility of its kind in the East by U.S.News & World Report. This marks the 20th consecutive year that Kessler has been listed among the nation's best hospitals in this annual independent survey.

"We are honored that Kessler has again been named one of the very best rehabilitation hospitals in the country," said President Robert Brehm. "This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to clinical excellence and the delivery of quality care. We are proud of our more than 2000 Kessler employees and the work they do each day, but prouder still of our patients whose progress is the true measure of our success."

Kessler again claimed the second spot in this year's national rankings, a position it has held for six of the past seven years.

According to U.S.News, the mission of the Best Hospitals ranking is to help guide patients who need an especially high level of care because of a difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. "These hospitals … should be on your list when you need the best care," noted Avery Comarow, U.S.News Health Rankings Editor. "They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases." Kessler's Chief Medical Officer Bruce M. Gans, M.D. added that, "To be ranked second among the more than 1100 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and units in the country is important recognition of Kessler's leadership in patient care, research, education and advocacy. It also highlights the critical role of acute rehabilitation hospitals in helping individuals who have experienced a stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury or other catastrophic injury or illness to rebuild their lives."

Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation is one of only five federally designated Model Systems in the nation for the treatment and research of both traumatic brain injury (www.kessler-rehab.com/programs/brain-injury-rehab) and spinal cord injury (www.kessler-rehab.com/programs/spinal-cord-injury-rehab). In addition, the hospital provides that same level of comprehensive care and specialized treatment to address the complex needs of individuals with stroke (www.kessler-rehab.com/programs/stroke-rehab), amputation (www.kessler-rehab.com/programs/amputee-rehab), neurological disorders (www.kessler-rehab.com/programs/outpatient-services/neuro-rehab), and orthopedic conditions (www.kessler-rehab.com/programs/orthopedic-rehab).

Kessler Institute, a division of Select Medical (www.selectmedicalcorp.com), has three hospital campuses in West Orange, Saddle Brook and Chester, NJ and more than 80 outpatient Kessler Rehabilitation Centers in the state (www.kessler-pt.com).

The annual U.S.News rehabilitation hospitals list (www.usnews.com/besthospitals) is based on independent surveys of randomly selected board-certified physicians specializing in rehabilitation medicine who were asked to name the hospitals that provide the best care to patients with serious conditions, regardless of location or expense.
