In appisode five of Leo's Pad, called The Wishing Fish, Leo and friends are joined by Fusch, a character inspired by Confucius, preparing for a journey to find a magical Koi fish that grants wishes. Fusch guides each player through a series of six adaptive games that work on developmentally appropriate early learning skills including: cognitive flexibility, self-help skills, phonemic awareness, perspective taking, and problem solving. These skills are part of the research-based assessment framework embedded into Leo's Pad and are artfully woven into immersive activities that follow the storyline introduced by Leo and Fusch.

  • Cognitive flexibility — In the first game, learners are invited to identify shapes and colors to create a fireworks display. The activity itself is a task-switching game, which requires children to follow a rule and then bend their mind to a new rule soon after.
  • Self-help skills — In game two, it's bedtime for Leo's pet dragon Cinder, so children are asked to help Cinder through a sequence of activities to prepare, including washing her face and brushing teeth. This section targets the larger curricular category of acquiring physical routines.
  • Phonemic awareness — Fusch and friends visit the library in game three, and learners are engaged in identifying sounds from the book titles.
  • Perspective taking — Next, in game four, players are invited to choose which items they'd wish for and create a picture from them. Once they've created their own picture, they are asked to consider what Cinder would wish for, in an exercise designed to help learners think about others.
  • Problem solving — In games five and six, Fusch invites kids to figure out how to build a staircase to reach the top of a log and how to build a simple ladder to get back down. These activities involve problem-solving skills and cover the concept of magnitude.
