A Las Vegas Pediatrics Expands Scope and Quality of Service with Spot Vision Screeners

LAKE MARY, Fla., Jan. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — A Las Vegas Pediatrics (ALVP), a pediatric practice with a mission to deliver first-class patient care via cutting-edge technology, and its medical director Dr. Elmer S. David, recently acquired two Spot devices, recognizing the importance of automated vision screening as part of its patient wellness visits.

ALVP's investment in state of the art patient technology also includes two self-service payment kiosks in the front lobby and employee access to patient files through iPads as well as computers. Spot's ease of implementation allows ALVP to store patient records on a widely used electronic medical record (EMR) system via Spot's Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling employees to download data quickly and easily.

John C. Richards, ALVP's business consultant, stated, "In the past, the vision-screening machines available to us could not give us such accurate screening results. Now we can tell parents when everything is or is not within a normal range and print the results directly fromSpot. By providing parents with documented information as to the visual condition their child may have, we can help parents follow through with the needed eye examinations from an eye care specialist."

ALVP discovered Spot and PediaVision during an onsite demonstration with patients. "Parents were amazed at how quickly Spot was able to screen. Normally children don't want to sit still or they're scared," said Richards. "But we haven't had any child cry, scream or try to get out of the chair because the actual screening is so simple and fast."

Obtaining the devices is also part of the ALVP's strategy to be a one-stop facility for patients. "We do testing for influenza, lead, diabetes, allergies, jaundice and vision," said Richards. Vision testing is particularly important since the American Academy of Pediatrics states, "Eye examination and vision assessment are vital for the detection of conditions that result in blindness … problems with school performance, or at worst, threaten the child's life[1]." Richards adds, "The Spot devices have been in use for about a month, and we've already screened over 500 patients."

"We're extremely pleased that ALVP has chosen Spot for the expansion of their services," said PediaVision vice president Jeff Mortensen. "They're already off to a very impressive start, and we're sure Spot will help them continue to grow."
