Two Leading Faith-Based Hospital Systems Select MedAptus for Inpatient Charge Capture and Management Technology

Software Implementation Underway at Memorial Health Care System and St. Vincent Health System

BOSTON, April 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — MedAptus® today announced the addition of two healthcare systems to its growing list of Professional Charge Capture (Pro) clientele. The organizations, Memorial Health Care System, Chattanooga, TN, and St. Vincent Health System, Little Rock, AR, both sought automated coding and billing software to eliminate paper encounter forms and improve revenue performance stemming from inpatient medicine operations.

Memorial Health Care System is a not-for-profit, faith-based healthcare organization that offers a continuum of care including preventative, primary and acute hospital care, as well as cardiac, cancer, orthopedic, imaging, and multitude of other services. Memorial is a regional referral center of choice with more than 4,000 associates and 700 affiliated physicians providing health care throughout Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia.  St. Vincent Health System was founded in 1888 as a 10-bed hospital and today, with 3,000 associates and 650 affiliated physicians, offers state-of-the-art critical and emergency care as well as specialists in cardiovascular, neurosurgical, oncology, orthopaedic, general surgical, and urology services, providing comprehensive care to patients from Central Arkansas, the surrounding region, and literally throughout the world.

Both Memorial and St. Vincent are members of Catholic Health Initiatives, a national nonprofit, faith-based health system that operates in 18 states and comprises 87 hospitals. As a result of the vendor vetting process with the two systems, which led to a national vendor evaluation as well, MedAptus has been named the exclusive physician charge capture provider to Catholic Health Initiatives entities.

"Memorial has been investigating technology for some time that will facilitate our ability to drive revenue enhancement. By replacing our inpatient pro-fee billing workflows with intelligent software aimed squarely at easing physician charge capture ahead of ICD-10, we expect an improved financial result," stated Glyn Hughes, president and CEO of Mountain Management Services, the physician organization at Memorial Health Care System.

Echoing the thoughts of Mr. Hughes is Mark McGinnis, chief financial officer of St. Vincent Health System, who added, "We are eager to streamline physician capture and submission of charges due to the significant revenue opportunity associated with those tasks. The usage of paper and the downstream effects of that paper on business office productivity create a hindrance to timely and maximal reimbursement. In the medical economics environment of 2014, there is no room for error."

At St. Vincent, the MedAptus Pro application will receive patient census data from the McKesson STAR system while completed charges will be transmitted to GE Centricity for billing once evaluated for appropriateness by the MedAptus Coder Workstation component. MEDITECH is the source hospital registration system at Memorial that will send real-time patient visit information to MedAptus; completed charges will be sent to Allscripts PM for billing. Once both organizations are deployed on the MedAptus technology, initially 75 physicians will be working in an electronic charge capture environment and enjoying a more efficient coding process.

"We are excited to welcome Memorial and St. Vincent as our newest customers and the first two Catholic Health Initiatives sites to embrace our Professional Charge Capture technology. We are confident that both systems will experience measurable revenue results as they transition from paper to proven software for the effective capture of inpatient charges. We look forward to sharing their outcomes with other faith-based entities within the CHI organization finding themselves in need of re-engineered coding workflows ahead of the ICD-10 changeover," said Gene Schneider, president and CEO of MedAptus.
