Each zone has a different support level that's calculated based on the proportional support a body needs to stay in healthy alignment when lying down. A sleeper's head and feet, for example, do not put as much pressure on the mattress and therefore do not need the same type of support as shoulders or hips.
"Most mattresses provide the same support throughout the entire mattress," says Michael Smith, Director of Marketing at Christeli. "That means that, when a mattress is too firm, you'll experience pressure points. And if the mattress is too soft, you'll get a hammock effect." Christeli's solution was to treat each zone as a different mattress.
"We ran many tests to determine the exact support level that the head, neck, back, hips, knees, and feet need separately, and then designed a single support layer with those specific varying levels," Smith says.
