"Psychology is actually a remarkably diverse discipline of study," said Susan Kemppainen, editor of BestMedicalDegrees.com. "The American Psychological Association identifies nearly fifteen different subspecialties exercised in a variety of different settings ranging from sports programs to private industry," Kemppainen said.  "For example, someone with a master's degree in forensic psychology, which examines criminal behavior, can find themselves working with law enforcement, serving as an expert witness in a trial or assisting attorneys in jury selection."

Other employment fields for master's prepared psychology students include counselors in schools, hospitals and nonprofit agencies and as human resource specialists and managers in industry and organizations.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates an 11% growth rate for psychology positions as demands for psychology services increase in the nonprofit and private sectors. Median salaries for this field range from $39,000 for counselors to $100,000 for human resources managers. Most states require licensure for psychology professionals to practice as a clinical psychologist.
