This Memorial Day Press the President Honors the Men and Women Who Died in Service to Their Country

Born out of the Civil War, the holiday recognizes the ultimate sacrifice of US military members

WASHINGTON, May 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — This Memorial Day, Press the President, an online collaborative opinion and political blog, is asking Americans to recognize the meaning of the sacrifice displayed by men and women who served and died in the United States military.

The holiday, which originally commemorated those fallen during Civil War fighting, varied from state to state, but women's groups and other community groups around the country started decorating the graves of Confederate and Union soldiers at the end of the war. The day of remembrance eventually expanded after WWI to include military dead from all US wars. The last Monday in May was officially declared a U.S. holiday in 1971.

Press the President hopes its audience will also pay tribute to the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

There are plenty of opportunities to pay tribute to those who laid down their lives defending The United States of America:

  • Decorate the Graves of Military Members – Boy Scouts have historically taken on this responsibility, but anyone can show appreciation for those who have fought and died in America's wars.
  • Volunteer at a VA Hospital: Contact your local VA hospital to learn what you can do to help honor the memory of fallen soldiers.
  • Work on Issues Impacting Veterans – While not everyone made it back, many did and Americans have a responsibility to take care of those who stood in harm's way. There are many healthcare and social infrastructure-related issues that impact our veterans. Let your opinions be heard so decision-makers can make the right choices. Record a video or write about issues for Press The President and get the word out!

Press the President wants you to share your story and your opinions. There are many issues facing our military members in this country, and we want to hear and see how you and your community are spending this Memorial Day and what is on your mind. To submit a picture, comment, or video, visit our website and submit at PressthePresident.com, tweet @PTP_US or post on our Facebook wall with the hashtag #RememberMemorialDay or #ThankAVet.
