The Mesothelioma Victims Center says, "We get a call from US Navy Veterans and/or shipyard workers who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma every week. When you hear their stories about asbestos exposure, it's almost hard to comprehend. US Navy shipyard workers have a nickname, and they are called 'Yardbirds.'

"Nearly every 'Yardbird' still alive today, who worked at a US Navy shipyard in the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, or 1980's could confirm the daily exposure to asbestos. US Navy sailors tasked to remain on their ship in dry dock, or for an overhaul, also had to help these shipyard workers on many occasions.

"We're trying to paint you the picture of how much exposure to asbestos these two groups of workers had during their careers—the amount is astonishing. At least the shipyard workers had the ability to leave the shipyard every evening; unfortunately the US Navy sailors were stationed on the very ship that had asbestos fibers freely floating for them to breathe in at all hours. We have heard many times that sailors would wake up in the morning covered in asbestos."

"If a US Navy Veteran or shipyard worker has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, we are urging them to call us at 866-714-6466 before they retain the services of a law firm or lawyer to advance a compensation claim for this rare form of cancer. As we would like to explain, not only do the lawyers we suggest get the best possible mesothelioma compensation, they also know the ins and outs of the VA system as well as anyone. Please don't financially shortchange yourself if you have mesothelioma." http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

  • Virginia

The federal government has made it a priority to clean up US Navy bases and/or shipyards where asbestos is present. This work began decades ago, and is still ongoing. The Center has enclosed a recent example of this in Philadelphia. There actually is a word for asbestos removal. It's called "abatement."

High risk work groups for exposure to asbestos include US Navy Veterans, power plant workers, shipyard workers, oil refinery workers, steel mill workers, miners, manufacturing workers, plumbers, electricians, auto mechanics, machinists, or construction workers. Typically the exposure to asbestos occurred in the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, or 1980's. http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, the average age for a diagnosed victim of mesothelioma is 72 years old.  Frequently victims of mesothelioma are initially misdiagnosed with pneumonia. This year between 2,500 and 3,000 US citizens will be diagnosed with mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is attributable to exposure to asbestos.

According to the CDC, the states indicated with the highest incidence of mesothelioma include Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Louisiana, Washington, and Oregon. However, based on the calls the Mesothelioma Victims Center receives a diagnosed victim of mesothelioma could live in any state including New York, Florida, California, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, or Alaska.
