$1,000 scholarship recipient Michael Batts will use funds for Texas Wesleyan University.
CLEVELAND, Oct. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Supporting the educational dreams of individuals with birth injuries caused by medical errors, Cleveland medical malpractice attorney Michael F. Becker recently awarded three scholarships in recognition of the lifelong challenges faced by those with birth injuries.
Becker awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Michael Batts of Ft. Worth, Texas, who will use the funds to assist with his education in Accounting at Texas Wesleyan University, as well as two $250 scholarships to: Stephanie M., studying Business Administration at Bethel University in her hometown of Memphis, and Micaela Griffin of Winona, Minn., who will use the scholarship while majoring in Business Administration at Winona State University.
One of the top 100 plaintiff attorneys in the United States, Becker was overwhelmed with the responses he received, expanding his initial plans of awarding one scholarship up to three winners. Applicants were required to submit a short essay and have a 3.0 GPA or higher.
"I am thrilled to help Michael, Stephanie and Micaela, who have all overcome obstacles and remained dedicated to their goals of higher education," Becker said. "I also wanted to bring greater awareness to birth injuries and to the brave men and women who meet their challenges head on, despite having a difficult start in life."
To that end, Becker created BirthInjuryJustice.org for those seeking additional information about birth trauma and legal claims. The site provides resources to the affected people that may not understand all the facets of their child's condition, how it happened or how they can cope.
In his award-winning essay, Batts explained how he has successfully lived with cerebral palsy, finding "greater empathy for others, along with a deep admiration for people who overcome challenges. I've also gained greater confidence as I've accomplished things people doubted possible."
