Microvi Receives NSF 61 Certification for Application of its Platform Technology for the Drinking Water Industry

HAYWARD, Calif., Oct. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Microvi Biotechnologies, a leader for innovative biocatalytic technologies in the water, renewable energy and chemical industries, announced today that it received NSF/ANSI Standard 61 Certification for its MicroNiche Engineered (MNE) catalysts for drinking water applications including nitrate treatment.

Microvi's Nitrate degradation technology, MB-N2, utilizes MNE catalysts to convert nitrate in water to nitrogen gas, a harmless byproduct, safely and efficiently.  MB-N2 technology is the first to degrade nitrate in water without producing a secondary waste stream and has dramatically lower treatment times and higher removal efficiencies than conventional systems. The MB-N2 technology has also been certified by the Australian Water Quality Centre (AWQC) for treatment of nitrate in drinking water applications.

The NSF/ANSI certification was awarded by the Water Quality Association (WQA) through their Gold Seal Certification Program.  The WQA is the oldest third party testing and certification program in the drinking water treatment industry.  This certification confirms the safety of MNE catalysts for a wide range of drinking water applications.  To be certified the technology must meet regulatory requirements for the US and Canada assessed through stringent product testing and material analysis.

"The NSF certification is another validation of our technologies' safety and sustainability in water applications," said Dr. Fatemeh Shirazi, CEO of Microvi. "This certification shows our commitment to developing superior green technologies for the water industry."

Microvi's MB-N2 technology for drinking water is currently in use in a number of diverse applications worldwide including a water utility in California and drinking water systems used to provide clean water to aboriginal communities in Australia.
