Millicorp Congratulates the Leadership of Acting Chairwoman Clyburn on Prison Phone Reform

FORT MYERS, Fla., Aug. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — ConsCallHome, a division of Millicorp, released the following statements in appreciation of Acting Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn's initiative in providing relief to inmates and their friends and families from egregiously high prison phone rates.  The issue of prison telephone reform has been before the Federal Communication Commission for over a decade.  Under the leadership of Chairwoman Clyburn, it not only has become a priority for the Commission, but the Commission today provided a resolution.

A crucial step taken today to address prison phone rates.  Today's Commission vote comes more than a decade after Martha Wright first approached the Commission to complain about the exorbitant cost of prison telephone calls.  Ms. Wright became aware of this issue when she was forced to pay predatory rates to talk with her incarcerated grandson.  Like millions of others across the country, this experience made her painfully aware of the great damage that high prison phone rates can do to families and inmates by effectively preventing them from remaining in touch during the inmates' incarceration.

Chairwoman Clyburn stated, "This is simply the right thing to do."  She continued, "Multiple studies have shown that meaningful contact beyond prison walls can make a real difference in maintaining community ties, promoting rehabilitation and reducing recidivism."  She is absolutely correct.  And the problem is magnified by the fact that inmates typically are incarcerated in correctional facilities a hundred miles or more from home.

Timothy Meade, President and CEO of Millicorp, stated, "All of us at Millicorp would like to thank Acting Chairwoman Clyburn and the Commission staff, both former and present, for shedding light on this issue and taking concrete action.  We look forward to working with Chairwoman Clyburn and the Commission in the future on further prison phone reform and the implementation of today's Commission decision.  Her leadership on this issue, which affects over 2 million families every day, was timely and effective.  It is important for us to remember how fragile these families can be and that often times a parent is forced to choose between their children speaking to their incarcerated mom or dad and buying milk.  No one should be forced to make this choice.  As a result of today's action, Today's action makes real progress towards resolving an issue that has remained on the table for far too long."
