Mobile Experts Illustrates the Details of 5G mm-wave Radios

New Report Provides Guidance on Spectrum, Key Technical Factors, and Comparison of CMOS, SiGe, GaN, InP, GaAs

CAMPBELL, Calif., March 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Mobile Experts released a new report today on 5G Millimeter Radio Implementation. It provides clear guidance on the likely millimeter-wave link budget, power levels, and the key technical factors driving the choice of CMOS or other semiconductor alternatives.

Principal Analyst Joe Madden explained, "While many things about 5G are not known, industry leaders have reached broad consensus on a few architectural decisions. We've been able to identify the key decisions in spectrum allocation, base station deployment, and Massive MIMO array designs which will dramatically impact the basic technology for 5G.  Our analysis illustrates the conditions where CMOS might be acceptable, and other conditions where SiGe, GaN, InP, or GaAs will be necessary."

"It's not too early for semiconductor vendors and base station OEMs to start investing in 5G.  The basic construction of a radio will be radically different than 2G/3G/4G when we deploy infrastructure above 24 GHz. We've collected dozens of examples of hardware using wafer-scale assembly of radios to achieve Massive MIMO arrays in a compact size. We've met with everyone from military radar experts to commercial WiGig vendors, and we've identified the middle ground where each technology will play a role."

This report contains 28 charts and diagrams to illustrate new radio techniques that are likely to be employed. Five scenarios are considered with various spectrum allocation approaches, power levels, and array types to illustrate the design choices facing OEMs. This report extends the 2014 and 2015 analysis by Mobile Experts, which predicted a business model and basic 5G radio architecture which accurately matches the consensus of leading OEMs today.
