Mobile Experts Releases New Base Station Transceiver Forecast Predicting Increase to 18 Million Base Station Transceiver Shipments by 2017

Most Comprehensive View Available of Base Station Market Counts Carrier Aggregation, Active Antenna and MIMO as Factors in Growth Renewal

CAMPBELL, Calif., Feb. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Mobile Experts has released a new Base Station Transceiver Forecast, including exclusive, in-depth Carrier Aggregation predictions, as well as comprehensive analysis of MIMO and Active Antenna System adoption in macrocells. Added complexity in the RF processing will lead to strong growth in transceiver shipments over the next five years, from 11 million units to more than 18 million units in 2017.

"We have investigated more than 33 different Carrier Aggregation band combinations," Principal Analyst Joe Madden describes, "and we've included the impact of CA in our transceiver forecast. The market has become highly complex, and our model includes AAS, Integrated Antenna/Radio modules, MIMO, and now CA in order to illustrate what is really driving the trends in the base station market.

"More than 18 million transceivers will be shipped in 2017, which represents significant growth over the 11 million shipped in 2012. MIMO, AAS, and Carrier Aggregation are all contributing to an increase in the number of transceivers. We have been able to collect input from more than 20 RF suppliers, in order to build a comprehensive database of shipments in key frequency bands. The result is the most comprehensive view available for the base station market. While we see the number of transceivers multiplying, we should caution suppliers that the average dollar content in each transceiver will drop due to the implementation of Active Antenna Systems and MIMO, as well as reductions in RF power level."

The Excel-based forecast model includes 5-year predictions for:
-Base Stations
-Radio Transceivers
-Remote Radio Heads (RRH)
-Active Antenna Systems (AAS)
-Integrated Antenna Radios (IARs)
-MIMO infrastructure, including 2×2 and 4xn MIMO base stations
-Carrier Aggregation (CA) transceiver deployment by frequency band
-Upgrades to existing base station transceivers for CA
-Transceiver shipments by frequency group
-Transceiver shipments broken out for every 3GPP band
-Transceiver shipments by power level
-Market shares for transceivers by OEM
– "Virtual base station shipments" (base stations that are "deployed" through software upgrades only)

Mobile Experts focuses this forecast on transceiver shipments, not base station shipments as our primary metric. The Base Station Transceiver Forecast includes a significant number of "virtual" transceiver shipments, where software upgrades have resulted in reduced hardware shipments. The result is more accurate tracking of the market than any other analyst firm can provide.

About Mobile Experts LLC:
Mobile Experts provides insightful market analysis for the mobile infrastructure and mobile handset markets. In the macrocell market, Mobile Experts tracks transceiver shipments, instead of base stations, as the primary metric. Transceiver shipments are tracked with an Advisory Board of 32 different mobile operators and up to 20 RF suppliers providing shipment data. Other research topics center on technology introduction for radio frequency (RF) and communications innovation. Recent publications focus on Small Cells, MIMO, Semiconductors for Small Cells, Backhaul for Small Cells, DAS, and Handset RF Front Ends.
