A Mommy Makeover for Daddies?

A "Daddy Do-Over" combines male tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) with a male breast reduction to provide an effective remodeling of a man's physique

ATLANTA, May 9, 2012 — A Mommy Makeover is a combination of plastic surgery procedures to help mothers regain their figure after childbirth. The typical combination — breast lift, breast augmentation, and abdominoplasty — were three of the five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States in 2011, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). But it isn't just moms who put on weight while snacking with the kids and sitting through hours of daily carpool runs. What about dads who've gone from hard body to soft touch while raising kids?

Guys who also want a total body remodel can seek a "Daddy Do-Over." The first component in a "Daddy Do-Over" is surgery to reduce enlarged male breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia. Gynecomastia affects older men as well as boys going through puberty, but is often simply a result of weight gain. It is estimated that up to 60 percent of men around the world have some degree of gynecomastia. Nationally, gynecomastia treatment is one of the top five cosmetic surgery procedures for men, with almost 18,000 such procedures performed during 2011.

The second procedure in a "Daddy Do-Over" is a male abdominoplasty or tummy tuck. This surgical procedure removes excess skin and fat from around the stomach while tightening the abdominal muscle wall for a firmer profile. An abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss method or an instant way to achieve washboard abs, but it does effectively firm up a man's midsection, where stubborn pockets of fat often collect. Currently, 95 percent of abdominoplasty procedures are performed on women — but it is an equally suitable procedure for men who have excess abdominal skin or are unable to shed all of the fat in their midsection.

Combining a gynecomastia procedure with an abdominoplasty gives men a body they can be proud to show off at the gym or at the beach. Atlanta plastic surgeons are seeing more and more men in their operating rooms these days. According to ASAPS, men had almost 800,000 cosmetic procedures in 2011, which is about 9 percent of the total number of procedures done in the United States. Like women, men gain greater confidence in themselves when their body image issues are resolved with plastic surgery.

Dads who want to improve their physique should start with a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. During this private meeting, men should be honest with their doctor about what they want and expect from cosmetic surgery. A "Daddy Do-Over" is not right for everyone, but as more men experience the benefits of plastic surgery, this combination of procedures will likely become more and more popular.
