Those who attend will gain real solutions to real challenges in today's schools. In two uplifting days, Mama J will introduce her 5 Power Principles and how to apply them in classrooms, schools, and districts. She also will provide strategies, activities, and resources educators can use to develop their own power plans for ensuring equity and excellence.

"This seminar has been strategically planned to equip K–12 educators, principals, administrators, social workers, and guidance counselors with research-based strategies that transform school cultures. They'll learn how to create 'Villages of Hope' while empowering underserved students and preparing them for college- and career-readiness," SDE program developer Beth Nee says.

Mama J knows first-hand the struggles and rewards of overcoming adversity. She's personally experienced poverty, stuttering, negative labels, and reading deficiencies and uses her life story to inspire educators to transfer challenges into successes. "I urge both leaders and teachers to attend to learn how to close relationship and achievement gaps, improve opportunities, and change outcomes for children of color and students who live in poverty," Mama J says.

She shares research and her personal experiences over 30 years in two powerful days of learning, empowerment, and inspiration. Participants will learn best practices to help empower underserved populations, engage diverse student populations, build effective relationships, teach and support social and emotional learning, transform trauma-sensitive environments, and partner with parents and community organizations.

Teams are encouraged to attend the seminar together to maximize impact. "It's the fastest way to change collective mindsets, bring about meaningful change, and make a real difference in the lives of all children, especially underserved populations," Nee says.

Keeping It Real! What It Takes to Reach, Teach, Lead & Succeed with Underserved Students will be offered in Memphis, TN, on November 29-30, 2016, and Houston, TX, on December 5-6, 2016.
