Natural Treatments For Anxiety Are An Effective Alternative To Drugs, Says Psychologist

FAIRFIELD, N.J., Dec. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Anxiety refers to a persistent sense of dread and fearful anticipation. In the United States anxiety along with depression are the top two most common psychological problems.  One Psychologist reports an increase in recommending non-pharmaceutical treatments such as Relax-V for mild to moderate anxiety.

Anxiety can steal the pleasure from life and turn the strongest person into a fearful indecisive victim.  And suffers are not alone: the American Psychiatric Association estimates that more than 40 million people suffer from anxiety disorders in any given year.

The two most common treatments for anxiety disorders are Serotonin Specific Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) like Paroxetine, and Benzodiazepines like Xanax.   Board-certified psychologist Dr. Mike Abrams says, "Both of these treatments, although effective for some users, have considerable drawbacks."

The SSRI's affect sexual performance, digestion, body weight, and can produce a strong rebound effect upon cessation of use.  "Most significant is the fact that they require up to 6 weeks to become effective, and in most users relieve only about a third of the anxiety."

Benzodiazepines are rapidly effective for anxiety but also are rapidly habit forming. Additionally, they also have the undesirable effect of impeding memory and causing sedation.

Relax-V is a natural alternative based on a traditional herbal remedy, valerian root, that has been used to treat anxiety for generations.  "In many people it can be as effective as drugs like SSRI's without any of the side effects."

Importantly, Relax-V's formulation is one that both ameliorates anxiety while calming the stomach and aids free breathing – two factors that contribute to well being and sense of calm. The Relax-V one-two calming combination has also shown a positive response to air travellers that experience travel anxiety and the fear of flying.

Dr. Abrams continues, "Relax-V is recommended as a first line for mild to moderate anxiety and can be purchased at a relatively low cost and without a prescription. I have used it in my practice with a high degree of success. As a psychologist I will generally recommend non pharmaceutical treatments when possible to avoid the complex array of effects associated with psychotropic drugs."

Dr. Mike Abrams, PhD, MBA, ABPP, is a board-certified psychologist and Associate Professor, NYU M.A. program in psychology.
